While here in Canada, I noticed a strange thing every time the Purolator trucks arrived and left at our office building to make deliveries. The startup of the trucks lacked the familiar starter turn plus diesel roar when it started up. Instead there was a quiet whine and almost silent motor whizz as the trucks would drive away. I later read the side of the truck which indicated these trucks were Hybrids! Amazing in my opinion, that a delivery company would invest into their fleet like that already!
Here's another company I found that's helping the trucking business get green. Check out
Smith Electric Vehicles which produces electric trucks capable of 50mph with a range of about 100miles.
My hope is that the cost effectiveness of these vehicles will allow FedEx and UPS to make the same sort of changes. You would think that with oil at as one of their major expenses, this type of upgrade would make sense for them as long as the technology is sound.
