Nuclear/Atomic Energy

After the earthquake and tsunami that hit Japan, the nuclear reactor issues are probably the last thing the Japanese people needed.  However, their advances and adoption of nuclear energy has enabled them to slow imports of oil while continuing to grow their technology rich society.  Is the advantage worth it though, when the consequences of unforeseen accidents could have such serious and long lasting consequences?
