Where innovators discuss world events and issues like alternative energy
I just read about UN workers killed as a retaliation over the burning of the Koran. These UN workers were killed during a protest in Afghanistan over the burning of the Koran by some pastors in Florida.
I firmly believe in free speech, but my question is, should we at home be aware that the free speech we enjoy while here safe at home, might be putting others at risk who are outside U.S. borders trying to protect that very right?
First, I want to say I understand that the crime was committed in Afghanistan and not in Florida. I don't think there is anything illegal about what the pastors did, however, I do feel like it was pretty irresponsible. Perhaps there was a real message that the pastors wanted to get across, but I have to question the way they went about getting that message out. I would imagine most pastors are interested in helping others, so I will give them the benefit of the doubt that they didn't meant to escalate this to violence. However, I would argue that if they didn't weigh the consequence of their actions on parts of the world that are already in turmoil, they need to learn something from this and hopefully educate others.
Just because you CAN do something or are ALLOWED to do something, doesn't mean you SHOULD do it. This is a lesson most of us learn as we grow up and we're allowed more and more freedom by our parents, and then by the government. We should exercise our rights, like freedom of speech, but while we exercise this freedom, just like carrying a guy, driving a car, etc, we should be aware of the possible dangers of using this right in ways that could effect others. To hide behind laws is the immature thing that we did when we were children. Just because you have the right to say what you want, doesn't mean you should, especially when you're hiding behind other people who are protecting that right for you.
